As the festive season approaches, a subtle shift is occurring in the world of Christmas tree traditions. Smaller and living trees are gaining popularity, particularly among those who seek to downsize their holiday decor. This trend is especially noticeable among older adults, according to Scott Powell, general manager of Dutchman Tree Farms in northwest Michigan.
The Rise of Smaller Trees
Powell notes that many people are opting for three-foot cut trees, often referred to as “tabletop trees,” to complement their holiday displays. “A lot of folks don’t always want the six- to seven-foot, larger tree, and so they’ll try the smaller ones,” Powell explained. These living trees offer a unique opportunity for individuals to create lasting memories by planting them outdoors, either in a field or in their landscape, as a reminder of cherished Christmases past.
Living Trees for Outdoor Decor
Beyond indoor use, customers are also turning to living trees for outdoor decorations. Porch pots and similar displays, traditionally made with cut branches, are now being crafted with these potted evergreens, adding a fresh and sustainable touch to outdoor holiday decor.
Texas Trends in Potted Evergreens
In Texas, Douglas Hingst of Pipe Creek Christmas Tree Farm has observed a growing interest in living Christmas trees over the past 15 years. Each year, he receives more inquiries from individuals eager to purchase potted evergreens, with expectations to sell approximately 80 living trees this season. In contrast, the farm typically sells around 1,400 choose-and-cut trees during the Christmas season.
Hingst remarked, “The people who buy (potted trees), they’re really serious about what they’re doing. They mostly have an idea of what they want to do with it, where they want to plant it and whatever reason they have behind it.” His farm offers two varieties of cypress, which are well-suited for the Texan climate and thrive in pots for extended periods. Some of these living trees can grow up to 8 feet before being taken home for the holidays.
