UGA’s New School of Medicine to Enroll First Students by Fall 2026

UGA School of Medicine secures industry partners, looks to enroll in Fall

The University of Georgia’s New Medical School: A Collaborative Endeavor

The University of Georgia is set to make a significant leap forward in medical education with its new School of Medicine, slated to welcome its inaugural class in fall 2026. A crucial factor in this development is the strong support from corporate giants, who are instrumental in funding the $100 million Medical Education and Research Building.

Leading the charge in financial contributions are The Delta Air Lines Foundation and Southern Company Foundation, both of which have committed substantial resources to ensure the project reaches completion.

Additional support comes from Anthem, Butler Automotive Group, Landmark Properties, Athens Construction Group, and Victory Real Estate, each playing a pivotal role in the initial phase of the school’s development.

Dr. Shelley Nuss, the founding dean of the new school, emphasized the importance of these partnerships: “We will continue to look to corporate partners as we enter new and exciting phases of development for the School of Medicine. The ongoing support of our corporate partners is vital to our efforts to build a healthier Georgia.”

The University of Georgia ranks ninth among institutions producing medical school applicants. Previously, it was the top recipient of NIH funding among U.S. public universities without a medical school.

With UGA’s influence spanning 159 Georgia counties, the new medical school is expected to have a widespread positive impact across the state.

While the first class is expected to begin in fall 2026, this is contingent on receiving preliminary accreditation from the LCME. The Medical Education and Research Building is anticipated to be completed by December 2026.
