AVL Manufacturing, a Canadian company specializing in custom industrial enclosures, is set to open a new production facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Governor Josh Stein announced that the expansion will result in the creation of over 325 jobs and an investment of $56 million in Mecklenburg County. The initiative is seen as a testament to North Carolina’s growing reputation for advanced manufacturing capabilities. AVL Manufacturing’s decision to establish a U.S.-based operation marks a significant step in its strategic expansion.
AVL USA, Inc., a newly formed subsidiary of AVL Manufacturing, aims to produce generator enclosures for industrial power systems at the Charlotte facility. These products are critical for ensuring power redundancy in sectors such as data centers, automotive, and emergency management. The facility will be AVL’s first manufacturing operation in the United States, emphasizing the strategic importance of the U.S. market for the company. The decision to locate in Charlotte was influenced by the city’s tech-forward environment and skilled workforce, according to Vince Dicristofaro, President of AVL.
A performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will assist AVL USA, Inc. in its Mecklenburg County project. This grant is contingent on the creation of 122 jobs, with an average salary of $90,088, surpassing the current county average wage. The OneNC Fund is designed to provide financial assistance to local governments, supporting job creation and economic investment. All grants require local government matching funds and job creation targets must be met for payment.
North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley expressed confidence in the economic impact of AVL’s decision to set up in Charlotte, emphasizing the state’s appeal to international investors. The project is supported by a coalition of partners, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership, and local government bodies. Local representatives see this development as a boost to the region’s economic engine, particularly in the Steele Creek area.
