Wildfires in South Georgia Impact Air Quality Across the State
Smoke from extensive wildfires in the southern part of Georgia is affecting air quality far beyond the immediate area, reaching as far north as Gainesville. This has resulted in a degradation of air quality ratings, with Athens-Clarke County also experiencing poor air conditions as the smoke travels north.
Over 90 wildfires are currently burning in the southern region, and authorities are battling to contain them. The fires remain largely uncontained, and officials warn that the ongoing drought is exacerbating the situation, providing ample fuel for the fires and potentially leading to worsening conditions in the near future.
In response to the escalating crisis, Governor Brian Kemp has issued a state of emergency for 91 counties, highlighting the severity of the situation and the widespread impact of these wildfires.
