Daniil Trifonov Shines in New Album of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Works

Rediscovering Tchaikovsky: Daniil Trifonov’s Fresh Take on Solo Piano Works

While Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely celebrated for his symphonies and ballets, his solo piano compositions often remain in the shadows. Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov’s latest release aims to bring these lesser-known works into the spotlight.

Trifonov, whose career has soared since clinching the prestigious grand prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, has captivated audiences with his interpretations of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. His discography also boasts an intriguing compilation of American piano concertos. However, his latest album marks his first full exploration of Tchaikovsky’s solo piano oeuvre, and the wait has proven worthwhile.

Featured on the album, the “Children’s Album,” also known as “Album for the Young,” stands out with its playful charm. This collection consists of 24 short pieces dedicated to Tchaikovsky’s nephew, echoing Robert Schumann’s “Scenes from Childhood” with themes of dolls, hobbyhorses, and church songs. Trifonov delivers a performance that respects the simplicity of the pieces while maintaining a light-hearted tone.

Another highlight of the album is a selection from Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty,” arranged for solo piano in the 1980s by Mikhail Pletnev. Trifonov captures the whimsy of characters like Puss-in-Boots and the Silver Fairy, alongside the inherent drama of one of Tchaikovsky’s most ambitious works.

The album also includes two lesser-known early compositions: “Theme and Variations” from “Six Pieces,” Op. 19, and Tchaikovsky’s debut “Piano Sonata” in C-major. Composed during his student days at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, the sonata went unpublished in Tchaikovsky’s lifetime. Critics suggest it reflects a composer in search of his voice, but Trifonov’s passionate interpretation brings new life to the piece.

This comprehensive album offers both familiar pleasures and hidden gems. Daniil Trifonov’s album “Tchaikovsky” is available now on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
