Nebraska’s Strong Effort Falls Short Against Michigan
In a thrilling contest, the Nebraska men’s basketball team narrowly missed a victory against the third-ranked Michigan Wolverines, with the game ending 75-72 in favor of Michigan. Despite the setback, the Huskers showcased their resilience, especially given the absence of key players.
The Huskers played without senior Rienk Mast, sidelined by an illness, and redshirt freshman Braden Frager, out with a sprained ankle. Even so, they managed to sink 10 three-pointers by halftime, securing a 50-48 lead. Senior guard Jamarques Lawrence was pivotal, scoring 11 consecutive points, including three successful shots from beyond the arc. Pryce Sandfort also contributed significantly with four three-pointers, two of which came in the closing moments of the first half.
As the second half unfolded, both teams’ shooting cooled, yet Nebraska maintained the lead until the final two minutes. Michigan’s late surge, capped by a 6-0 run, sealed the victory. The Huskers, facing a taller opponent, struggled with rebounds, trailing 35-23 in that department.
Head coach Fred Hoiberg expressed pride in his team’s performance under challenging circumstances. “Our guys, again, they fought through adversity, they battled,” Hoiberg said. “And listen, that team is projected by a lot of people to win a national championship.” He emphasized the team’s resilience, stating, “We’ve responded great when we’ve had a big, emotional win, and now we’re going to find out what we’re made of and how we’re going to respond to a tough loss like that.”
The absence of Mast was a last-minute development, with Hoiberg learning of his unavailability just 12 minutes before the game started due to a stomach bug. The coach noted the impact of Michigan’s size, saying, “Their size is going to wear everybody down.”
Despite the limited roster, freshman Leo Curtis impressed by scoring six points off the bench, while Cale Jacobson, stepping in for Mast, added eight points. Hoiberg praised Jacobsen, describing him as “tough as nails and a winner.”
Leading Nebraska’s scoring were Sandfort and Lawrence, each with 20 points. Sam Hoiberg also made a significant contribution with 13 points, marking the only other Husker in double figures.
The game was momentous for Nebraska, being their first encounter against a top-five team in program history. The Huskers entered the match with a perfect 20-0 record, having recently broken into the Associated Press poll’s top five for the first time.
The loss dropped Nebraska to 20-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Wolverines now share the top spot in the conference standings with a 9-1 record in the Big Ten and a 19-1 overall record. Illinois and Michigan State remain close contenders, with both having just one conference loss.
Looking ahead, Nebraska will have time to recover before facing another tough opponent, No. 9 Illinois, on Sunday. The upcoming schedule offers multiple opportunities to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee, including games against No. 12 Purdue and two matches against Iowa.
