In the latest development in Wisconsin’s political landscape, former President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, marking a significant moment in the state’s gubernatorial race. The endorsement, which was announced Tuesday night on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, could have a considerable impact on the Republican primary dynamics.

Trump’s statement on Truth Social expressed his unwavering support for Tiffany, stating, “He will fight to advance Common Sense Values, and put WISCONSIN, AND AMERICA, FIRST.” This move answers the lingering questions about Trump’s stance on the GOP primary for governor.

Having represented Wisconsin’s 7th District since 2020, Tiffany was seen as a frontrunner against Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann. However, recent fundraising reports indicated that Schoemann could mount a strong challenge. Trump’s endorsement could provide Tiffany with the edge he needs, as similar support has been pivotal in previous Republican primaries.

Four years ago, Trump’s backing helped businessman Tim Michels surpass former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch in the 2022 GOP primary for governor. Nonetheless, Michels eventually lost to Democratic Governor Tony Evers in the general election. The question remains whether Trump’s endorsement will be advantageous for Tiffany in the general election, particularly in a cycle where polls suggest a Democratic advantage.

Following Trump’s announcement, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin quickly criticized Tiffany, highlighting Trump’s support as a negative factor. State Democratic Party Chair Devin Remiker remarked, “We agree with Donald Trump—Tom Tiffany has been by his side for all of it: ICE murdering Americans in the streets, the Big Ugly Bill, ending funding for the Affordable Care Act, invading Greenland, and raising every day costs.” Remiker further stated, “Donald Trump just made Tom Tiffany the general election nominee, and we will stop him from bringing his chaotic and dangerous agenda in November.”

The Democratic primary for governor is highly competitive, with at least seven candidates in the race, many of whom are centering their campaigns on criticizing Trump. The upcoming election will determine the successor to Governor Evers, who is not seeking a third term.

In addition to endorsing Tiffany, Trump also expressed his support for Michael Alfonso, Tiffany’s potential successor in Congress. Alfonso, who is the son-in-law of U.S. Treasury Secretary Sean Duffy, is one of four Republicans vying for the position. Trump described Alfonso as “a young ‘STAR’.”

Alfonso responded on X, stating it is his “greatest honor to accept this endorsement from President Donald J. Trump,” and promised “to be a steadfast MAGA warrior.”
