The University of Michigan is inviting faculty and staff to submit groundbreaking proposals for transformative projects, with the chance to share in a substantial $1 billion fund. This initiative is part of a decade-long commitment unveiled by President Domenico Grasso to foster impactful change through innovative ideas across the university’s campuses and the wider community.
Applications for this significant funding opportunity, known as the Strategic Initiative Fund (SIF), are due by February 9. The evaluation process involves a diverse committee comprising both internal and external experts, and the outcome will be announced in March 2026.

During the State of the University address in November, President Grasso outlined this extensive investment plan, designed to align with U-M’s mission and ambitions for societal impact. The Strategic Initiative Fund aims to support high-impact projects with far-reaching effects, providing one-time financial resources tailored to different project scales.
The call for proposals is open to all faculty and staff across the university’s three campuses, including Michigan Medicine. Proposals should emphasize institutional value, social impact, and innovative solutions to complex problems, all in line with the university’s strategic vision.
The funding is segmented into three tiers, offering up to $500,000, $1 million, or $5 million per project. This structure is intended to cater to a range of project sizes and scopes.
To assist applicants, the Look to Michigan Vision office and the Strategic Initiative Fund Implementation team have set up several support mechanisms. The FAQ section on the SIF website provides comprehensive answers to common queries.
Moreover, virtual information sessions are available to guide participants through the fund’s objectives and application process. These sessions aim to be inclusive, supporting individuals and teams regardless of where they are in the development of their concepts.
Each session conducted via Zoom will feature a concise presentation covering the Strategic Initiative Fund’s purpose, funding priorities, applicant eligibility, and necessary application criteria. Following the presentation, there will be an interactive Q&A segment. Participants have the option to engage in one-on-one discussions in separate Zoom rooms afterward.
Additional support is available through telephone office hours, which can be scheduled directly via the Strategic Initiative Fund webpage. This offers another avenue for personalized consultation.
