Special Education Teacher’s Initiative Brings Joyous Overnight Trip for Students
January 27, 2026
Students in special education often miss out on many of the typical school experiences. Unlike their peers, they might not wear team jerseys or join cheerleading squads, and their opportunities for participating in enriching activities are fewer.
This observation inspired Wes Massey, a dedicated special education teacher in Georgia, to take action.

“A lot of our kids don’t get to participate in things like basketball or cheerleading,” shared Massey. “I want these kids to enjoy what other kids would enjoy.”
Through the collaborative efforts of volunteers and generous donations, Massey organized a groundbreaking event for 31 students in the state’s alternate assessment program, along with their families: their inaugural overnight trip.
Their destination was Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange, Georgia, and remarkably, families were spared any costs. Everything, including transportation, meals, lodging, and activities, was funded.
The trip involved meticulous planning, with arrangements for multiple buses and support vehicles to meet the needs of students with complex medical conditions, such as those requiring oxygen or feeding tubes.
Upon arrival, surprises awaited the families. Each student received gift cards, empowering them to make independent choices, such as purchasing their own meals. Activities they engaged in, such as family putt-putt, Build-A-Bear, and interactive games, were new experiences for many.
The community’s backing was significant. As the group traveled, an escort by the county sheriff underscored the wide-ranging support rallying behind these students.
Massey conveyed a profound message through this initiative. “I know life has been hard and there have been challenges,” he said. “But we are going to do everything we can to make sure you’re included, you’re important, and that you matter.”
