Surviving and Thriving: Life Post-Terminal Diagnosis

Life after: a terminal diagnosis

Jazz Turner, a 27-year-old sailor who suffers from terminal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, recently accomplished her dream of solo circumnavigating the UK and Ireland despite her failing health. This young sailor from Seaford, East Sussex, courageously faces her life-limiting condition with a focus on enhancing the quality of life rather than quantity.

Turner’s strength emanates not just from her own determination, but also from the unwavering support of her partner, her foster parents, and her friends at the Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club. She also draws inspiration from the members of Sailability, a boating charity for disabled persons, where she shares a strong bond with over 100 people.

Despite the debilitating muscular, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular complications brought about by her condition, Turner finds solace in sailing. She says, “At sea, Mother Nature couldn’t care less who you are, what you are or where you come from – all it cares about is your ability to adapt to the conditions.” This statement underlines her indefatigable spirit and adaptability, which were put to the test during her historic circumnavigation.

After 28 days of battling with the elements, Turner successfully became the first disabled woman to complete a solo, non-stop, unassisted circumnavigation of the UK and Ireland. Her journey was made even more challenging since she was prone to fainting and had to manage without any assistance or medical help. However, her unfaltering spirit was rewarded with the beauty of the ocean, from glorious dawns and sudden bursts of wind to playful pods of dolphins.

Turner has a history of overcoming challenges. As a teenager, she was effectively homeless and estranged from her family. Her local sailing club provided much-needed support that helped her rebuild her life. When doctors gave their final prognosis in December 2023, Turner chose to withdraw from further treatment due to its detrimental effects on her life. Her approach towards life encapsulates her resilience: “I would plan as if I have forever, but live as if I only have today.”
