EU Achieves Major Green Energy Milestone
In a historical development, the European Union (EU) reached a significant ‘tipping point’ for green energy last year. This marked the first instance of clean energy produced domestically generating more electricity than fossil fuels within the EU.
An extensive review conducted by Ember, the think tank, divulged that solar and wind power jointly accounted for 30.1% of electricity generated in the EU during 2025. This surpassed fossil fuel-based power sources, which contributed 29.0% of the total electricity. The remainder of the power supply was furnished by hydro and nuclear energy sources.
“This milestone moment is reflective of the rapid transformation occurring in the EU’s power sector,” stated Dr. Beatrice Petrovich, an energy analyst. Besides contributing to climate change mitigation, the surge in green energy also holds strategic significance for the EU.
The report highlighted how, in 2025, the EU was exposed to the risk of energy manipulation by fossil fuel exporting countries. As geopolitical uncertainties persist, investment in indigenous renewable energy sources emerges as a crucial strategy to lower such risks.
While the EU has been successful in reducing its reliance on Russian gas, it has simultaneously increased its dependence on imported liquified natural gas from the US. “The next milestone will be to significantly reduce the EU’s dependence on costly imported gas,” declared Petrovich.
She further identified the deployment of batteries as the pivotal factor in achieving this aim. As per the report, there was a notable acceleration in battery deployment within the EU last year.
