Lynne Walz Launches Campaign for Nebraska Governor as Democrat

Former Democratic senator officially announces gubernatorial campaign

In a significant development in Nebraska’s political landscape, former state Senator Lynne Walz has declared her candidacy for governor. As a prominent Democrat, Walz represented the Fremont area in the state legislature from 2017 to 2025, laying the groundwork for her gubernatorial bid.

Back in November, Walz initiated her path to the governor’s office by forming an exploratory committee, indicating her interest in the role. “After two months of traveling and listening to Nebraskans across the state, I decided to enter the race for Governor,” Walz expressed through a news release. She emphasized the need for leadership focused on “creating and attracting good-paying jobs, supporting our public schools, and lowering the cost of food, health care, and day care,” while underscoring the shared values of Nebraskans.

Known for her bipartisan approach, Walz managed to secure elections in a predominantly Republican district, which favored Donald Trump in presidential elections by a wide margin. However, she now faces the challenge of contesting against the incumbent, Governor Jim Pillen, in a state that has not seen a Democratic governor since 1994. Additionally, Nebraska has yet to elect a female Democrat as governor, with the only woman to have held the position being Republican Kay Orr, from 1987 to 1991.

To elaborate on her campaign strategy, Walz is expected to hold a press conference later on Wednesday morning in Fremont. This event will provide further insights into her plans for Nebraska’s future.
