Wisconsin Releases $8M to MPS, Marking Key Milestone for District

New head of Milwaukee Public Schools wants to rebuild community trust. It’s an uphill battle.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has reached a crucial turning point as the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction finally released $8 million in previously withheld state funds. This release signifies the last portion of state funding that had been on hold due to financial and operational discrepancies identified within the district.

The district has also completed its external financial audit for the 2024-25 period, marking the third audit in just over a year. This rigorous financial scrutiny underscores the district’s efforts to restore credibility and efficiency.

Since her appointment in March, MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius has concentrated on enhancing district operations to foster trust and transparency. “I’m proud of the team here at MPS who committed to fixing these significant issues with a sense of determination and Milwaukee pride while facing intense public pressure and scrutiny,” Cassellius expressed in a statement.

The Department of Public Instruction initially informed MPS in May 2024 about the potential loss of substantial state funding due to missed deadlines for mandatory financial reporting. The funds were eventually withheld when the district failed to meet submission requirements.

This issue triggered the resignation of former Superintendent Keith Posley and prompted intensive state audits of MPS’s management practices. Consequently, a detailed 29-page corrective action plan was developed to address the district’s financial and administrative challenges.

Appointed in March to replace Posley, Cassellius has worked on revamping the district’s financial systems based on audit findings. Her tenure also involved navigating the aftermath of a lead poisoning crisis that temporarily shut down several schools.

By December, MPS, in collaboration with the city, completed the necessary lead remediation across the district, marking another step forward in its recovery efforts.
