A Baker’s Journey: Manolo Betancur’s Impact on Charlotte’s Community

As the curtain rises on “The ChangeBaker,” a documentary highlighting the life and influence of Manolo Betancur, audiences at the Carolina Theatre will witness the remarkable story of a baker turned community icon. The film, directed by Courtney Dixon, centers on Betancur’s journey as the owner of Manolo’s Bakery and his role as a significant voice in Charlotte’s immigrant community.

In an interview, Manolo Betancur described himself as “the Colombian version of Tom Sawyer,” growing up in a small South American town with a deep admiration for the United States. His love for the country was cultivated through American television, instilling a belief in the U.S. as a land of opportunity. Now an American citizen, Betancur embodies the realization of dreams.

Transitioning from baking to filmmaking, Betancur shares his story through “The ChangeBaker,” focusing on his philanthropy and experiences since arriving in America. “What we went through in the film is a small version of what we went through a couple of months ago,” he explained. The documentary concludes with “a big call to humanity,” capturing the essence of Charlotte and the bakery’s symbolic role in the community.

Manolo’s Bakery became a focal point for protests against U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) last November. Betancur welcomed demonstrators, even offering them cake, underscoring his belief that “in order to have a change in society, somebody has to protest, but the protest has to be peaceful.”

Beyond protests, Betancur is known for his humanitarian efforts, providing birthday cakes for the homeless, distributing bread in Ukraine, and delivering baked goods to western North Carolina during Hurricane Helene. He attributes his drive to give back to feeling “lucky to be part of this nation” and describes his relationship with God as symbiotic: “I gave back to the community and God gives me more.”

The premiere of “The ChangeBaker” sold out, a testament to the support Betancur receives from the Charlotte community. Despite feeling unwelcome at times, Betancur acknowledges the love between him and the city, stating, “I know the biggest majority in this city is good people, and the biggest majority in this country is good people.”
