Creative Greensboro Launches Community Art in Transit Initiative

Creative Greensboro launches bus shelter art project

Greensboro’s New Art Initiative Transforms Bus Shelters Into Community Landmarks

In an exciting new venture, Creative Greensboro and the New Arrivals Institute are collaborating to bring vibrant art installations to local bus shelters. This initiative aims to infuse the urban landscape of Greensboro with creativity and community spirit.

Last year, Creative Greensboro’s Neighborhood Arts program allocated $15,000 to empower arts organizations in the area. The goal was to back projects that originate from neighborhoods and speak to the unique narratives of those communities.

Jocquelyn Boone, Greensboro’s Chief Creative Economy Officer, emphasizes the significance of this initiative. She explains that the funding is intended to support artistic endeavors that encapsulate the stories, values, and lived experiences of local residents.

Boone highlights the multifaceted benefits of this art project: “Community art, first of all, builds pride. It builds connection and belonging. Public art really does bridge divides. We want people to be able to shape creatively where they live, and decide what type of impacts that community art can have.”

The ongoing project, titled Community Art in Transit: Stories of Hope and Home, is currently inviting artists from Guilford County to submit their applications by February 18. The chosen artworks will be featured on three bus shelters, transforming them into beacons of local culture and expression.
