Duke Energy Explores Nuclear Potential at Belews Creek Site

Duke Energy seeks federal review for potential Belews Creek nuclear site

In an effort to explore new energy solutions, Duke Energy has initiated a request for federal evaluation of a site near the Belews Creek Steam Station for potential nuclear energy development. This move aligns with the company’s objectives to adhere to state-imposed carbon reduction mandates.

Spanning 1,000 acres, the site is under consideration for nuclear reactor construction. However, Duke Energy has not yet solidified any specific plans. Bill Norton, a spokesperson for the company, highlighted the importance of applying for an Early Site Permit with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Norton explained, “This permit allows the NRC to evaluate the site for key factors that might delay future construction issues, such as environmental issues, seismic conditions, etc. By filing the Early Site Permit, we’re really resolving those potential issues on the front end.”

The permit review process is anticipated to span approximately 18 months. During this period, Duke Energy will assess various nuclear technologies before finalizing any decisions.

Nuclear power is already a significant component of Duke Energy’s portfolio, providing over half of the electricity that the company distributes in North Carolina.
