In the wake of a controversial military operation by Israeli and U.S. forces in Iran, Wisconsin’s representatives are voicing their opinions, reflecting a deep partisan divide over the incident, which reportedly resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin
Senator Tammy Baldwin took to social media to express her concerns about the military action, emphasizing that diplomacy should be prioritized over war. She highlighted the threat posed by Iran but warned against engaging in another prolonged conflict, stating, “President Trump illegally bombed Iran, totally disregarding the Constitution, putting American troops in harm’s way, and starting another war in the Middle East with no end in sight.” Baldwin urged Congress to reconvene to address what she termed as “senseless and illegal bombings.”
Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson
Senator Ron Johnson’s response was succinct, directing his message towards the U.S. troops involved in the operation. He wished for their safety, stating, “May God bless and protect our troops as they attempt to liberate the long suffering people of Iran.”
Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Prairie du Chien
Representative Derrick Van Orden issued several statements, asserting that Iran has been in conflict with the U.S. for decades. He criticized those opposing the military action and called for resignation from those he accused of siding with Iran. With strong words, he defended the operation and dismissed criticism of the President’s unilateral decision to use force.
Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee
Representative Gwen Moore described the strikes as a “lawless military operation” and criticized the President for acting without Congressional approval. She urged for a vote on the War Powers Resolution to prevent further escalation, remarking, “In authorizing these strikes without Congress, the candidate who campaigned on peace is now bent on starting wars.”
Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua
Running for governor, Representative Tom Tiffany criticized a political opponent while expressing support for American servicemembers. He referenced past remarks made by Mandela Barnes and concluded with a blessing for U.S. troops.
Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison
Representative Mark Pocan voiced skepticism about the President’s motives, suggesting that the military action was a distraction from domestic issues. He also highlighted concerns about political agendas related to redistricting in Wisconsin.
Rep. Tony Wied, R-De Pere
Focusing on the well-being of American soldiers, Representative Tony Wied expressed his support and prayers for the troops involved in the mission, avoiding political commentary.
Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Janesville
Representative Bryan Steil also offered his support for U.S. soldiers, abstaining from political discussions. He expressed his gratitude for their service in the operation, referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.”
