Washington County Halts Highway Renaming Effort Due to Costs
Washington County has decided not to proceed with a plan to rename a highway in memory of Charlie Kirk, the late conservative activist. The decision was primarily influenced by financial considerations, according to County Board Chair Jeffrey Schleif.
Charlie Kirk, who was leading Turning Point USA at the time of his death, was fatally shot during a speaking engagement in Utah last year. Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann had initially proposed the renaming to “Charlie J. Kirk Way” and suggested that private donations could cover the estimated $50,000 for the memorial highway signage.
However, the proposal faced significant opposition during a county board committee meeting earlier this month. Many questioned the rationale behind honoring someone with no local ties to the county. Schleif mentioned he had received over 250 emails and phone calls from individuals opposing the measure.
In a statement covered by WTMJ-TV, Schleif noted that the actual expenses involved in the renaming would have been higher than previously estimated. He stated, “While we wish the process had gone smoother, this matter is no longer under consideration.”
The decision to drop the proposal reflects a careful consideration of both the fiscal impact and the community’s sentiments regarding the tribute.
