Gig Workers Face Economic Challenges Amid Rising Costs

According to a recent report by Defend America Action, individuals working in the gig economy are under significant financial pressure due to various economic factors.

Gig workers, encompassing roles such as delivery drivers, rideshare contractors, and freelancers, now total over 50 million in the U.S., marking one of the fastest-growing employment sectors.

These workers, who often face unstable employment and income variability, are grappling with increased expenses due to tariffs, the ongoing conflict in Iran, and cuts to healthcare programs like Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Fuel price hikes are particularly impactful, with gas prices having surged by 60% since the Iran conflict began. Companies like Uber and Lyft do not compensate drivers for fuel costs, leaving many to absorb these expenses themselves.

John Mejia, a California-based Uber driver, shared with The Guardian, “A few weeks ago, I filled up my hybrid car for $36. Now it’s $60.”

The escalating fuel prices have also led to higher retail costs, compounding the effects of inflation. On average, Americans spent $2,300 more in the previous year compared to 2024.

The report warns that gig workers will face further financial pressure as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid, takes hold. This cut could result in 7.8 million Americans losing health insurance, with 20% of Medicaid users being self-employed.

Additionally, the Act did not renew enhanced tax subsidies that had decreased Obamacare plan costs, potentially forcing 4.2 million people to either pay higher premiums or forego insurance. Of these individuals, approximately 38% are self-employed.

The report critiques the Trump administration’s economic policies, stating these challenges would not exist “without the cooperation of Republicans in Congress.”

“Instead of protecting gig workers and self-employed Americans against higher costs, Republicans in Congress are driving countless hardworking Americans to lose life-saving coverage and go without care on top of skyrocketing prices,” the report states.
