Rep. Mike Lawler’s Re-election Campaign: Balancing Moderation with Far-Right Alliances
New York Representative Mike Lawler is seeking re-election in the 17th District, comprising parts of the Hudson Valley, but his campaign activities reflect a complex political strategy involving connections with prominent far-right figures.
Having secured his seat in the last election by a margin of fewer than 16,500 votes in a district that turned against President Donald Trump, Lawler now faces a challenging political landscape. His campaign efforts have included events with notable conservative figures, suggesting a nuanced approach to rallying support.
Fundraisers with Conservative Leaders
On October 23, Lawler organized a fundraising event in Monsey, NY, alongside Texas Senator Ted Cruz. According to a GovTrack analysis, Cruz ranks as the third most conservative member in Washington. He is also known for his efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. Tickets for the Monsey event were priced between $250 and $7,000, with footage from Monsey Scoop showing Lawler and Cruz engaging with attendees.
Another significant fundraising event took place at the Putnam County Golf Course, featuring Ohio Representative Jim Jordan, deputy chair of the far-right House Freedom Caucus. The Caucus had proposed substantial cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in 2023, ideas that surfaced in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Lawler has supported.
Supporting Far-Right Candidates
Lawler’s involvement also extends to supporting far-right candidates in their campaigns. Last month, he participated in a get-out-the-vote rally for New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli. In his campaign, Ciattarelli has praised Trump’s OBBB, aligned with anti-vaccine advocates, and shared disinformation about immigrants and transgender athletes. Ciattarelli also associated with far-right conspiracist Jack Posobiec. Ultimately, Ciattarelli lost the election on November 4 to Democrat Mikie Sherrill.
Endorsements and Political Strategy
In a recent development, Lawler has endorsed Representative Elise Stefanik in her campaign for New York governor. This endorsement comes after Lawler briefly considered his own gubernatorial campaign, despite previously calling Stefanik too extreme. Stefanik’s platform includes support for a nationwide abortion ban, the elimination of Obamacare, and pardoning participants in the January 6 Capitol riot. Her campaign has secured an endorsement from Trump.
Political dynamics are shifting as several Democrats have announced they will challenge Lawler in the upcoming election. A DCCC spokesperson, Riya Vashi, commented, “Mike Lawler will toss New Yorkers aside in a heartbeat if it keeps him in Donald Trump’s good graces. From enabling Trump’s extreme agenda to backing his dangerous ‘Ultra MAGA’ ally in New York for Governor, Mike Lawler keeps reminding Hudson Valley voters exactly who he works for — and it’s certainly not them.”
