New York Rep. Mike Lawler Calls for Political Unity Amid Controversy

In a recent op-ed for the New York Times, New York Representative Mike Lawler urged bipartisan leaders to quell the rising political tensions. This appeal for unity comes on the heels of revelations about his financial support to an aide embroiled in controversy over alleged incitement of disruptive behavior.

Financial documents reveal that in October 2025, Lawler’s campaign contributed $1,000 to Erin Crowley, who was seeking re-election to the Putnam County Legislature. At the time, Crowley was employed by Lawler as his deputy district director.

LoHud reported in July 2025 that Crowley’s phone number was found in a private Signal messaging group named Fight Lawler. This group was devising strategies for peaceful protests against Lawler’s political actions.

Members of Fight Lawler claimed that Crowley joined their group under a pseudonym, pretending to be an ally while urging members to disrupt an impending town hall meeting in Somers, NY, where Lawler was to appear.

During the town hall on May 5, Crowley, present in her official capacity, was seen admonishing attendees for their disruptions while simultaneously encouraging more disturbances in the group chat. The event culminated in chaos, resulting in police forcibly removing a 64-year-old woman from the venue.

“She infiltrated our Signal group,” expressed Maureen Morrissey, co-founder of Fight Lawler. “We are so sickened by it.”

Crowley’s actions were met with widespread denunciation. Progressive organizations, including the New York Working Families Party and Indivisible, jointly demanded Crowley’s resignation. Her conduct was described as “disappointing” by Republican Legislator Paul Jonke. Frank Ciano, a local Republican activist, suggested that Lawler dismiss Crowley.

Despite the pressure, Crowley remains employed by Lawler, as indicated on her LinkedIn profile. Furthermore, she secured another legislative term, supported by Lawler’s campaign funds.

As Lawler gears up for his re-election campaign, he is considered one of the most at-risk House Republicans.
