Sheriff Linked to Abuse Controversies Joins Campaign Trail with Senator
Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, under Sheriff Bryan Bailey, has drawn significant attention after allegations of severe misconduct, including brutal abuse and violations of civil rights. Despite these claims, Bailey has aligned himself with Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s re-election campaign.
On March 7, Hyde-Smith, who is seeking a second term, attended a political breakfast with Bailey in Rankin County. This collaboration comes in the wake of a troubling incident involving the sheriff’s department earlier in the year.
In a shocking incident from January 2023, five officers from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office entered a residence without legal authorization and inflicted severe harm on two Black men inside. Their brutal actions included the use of a taser, physical assault with a wooden plank, and forcing a sex toy into the victims’ throats. The violence escalated when an officer accidentally discharged a firearm inside one victim’s mouth, resulting in a shattered jaw. The officers reportedly used racial slurs during the attack.
The officers involved confessed to numerous charges, including hate crimes. However, for many residents of Rankin County, this episode symbolizes a broader pattern of misconduct within the sheriff’s office.
An investigation by The New York Times revealed that numerous county residents, particularly those who are poor or Black, have reported similar abuses by the police. One account details a man being repeatedly tased and having a stick forced into his throat, resulting in him vomiting blood. Another individual alleged that officers burst into his home at night, threatening him with sexual violence using a flashlight.
The officers accused of these acts reportedly dubbed themselves “The Goon Squad.”
Sheriff Bailey has expressed shock over the reported abuses, insisting he was unaware of these actions even though several victims assert they had informed his office about the misconduct.
“I have 240 employees, there’s no way I can be with them each and every day,” Bailey stated in his interview with The New York Times.
Senator Hyde-Smith has not publicly commented on the January 2023 incident or the subsequent legal proceedings. Her history includes opposition to a bipartisan police reform bill and backlash for remarks perceived as racially insensitive.
Furthermore, Bailey has faced other controversies.
In 2016, allegations arose that Bailey improperly acquired a subpoena to monitor his ex-girlfriend’s phone records. No charges were pursued, as local officials allegedly suppressed the inquiry.
Additionally, former inmates have accused Bailey of exploiting them for labor on his mother’s chicken farm, with some claiming they received no remuneration, while others were compensated with cash or meals.
Bailey has also been implicated in misusing county resources for personal farm-related activities.
Hyde-Smith’s opponent in the upcoming election is Democrat Scott Colm, a district attorney known for his involvement in prosecuting a separate case of corruption involving the mistreatment of inmates by a county sheriff’s office in 2024.
