Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 Steams into Scranton in June 2026

Union Pacific 'Big Boy' locomotive to make Scranton stop

The iconic Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 locomotive is set to journey to Northeast Pennsylvania, drawing an anticipated “tens of thousands” of visitors, according to officials. Known as the world’s largest steam locomotive, it is scheduled to make a historic stop at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton as part of its nationwide tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

This visit will reunite Big Boy No. 4014 with its static counterpart, Union Pacific No. 4012, marking a significant moment for train enthusiasts. The journey of No. 4014 represents its first crossing of the Mississippi River into the Ohio Valley since its creation in Schenectady, New York, back in 1941.

Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena expressed pride in sharing this “powerful piece of history” with the public, stating, “This tour celebrates our company’s rich 164-year history, our nation’s amazing story, and the people who have helped build our great country and our railroad.”

Constructed in 1941, No. 4014 is one of the 25 Big Boy locomotives initially made to transport freight during World War II. After covering over a million miles, it was retired in 1961, only to be revitalized in 2019 following its reacquisition from a museum in 2013. Besides No. 4012 in Scranton, seven other Big Boys are on display in various locations across the U.S.
