Susquehanna Historical Society Hosts Americana Costume Party Gala

Costume gala benefits Susquehanna County Historical Society's restoration project

The Susquehanna Historical Society, with its building dating back to 1907, is set to embark on a significant window restoration project. The building’s windows, which have seen better days, are about to get a much-needed facelift thanks to a $100,000 Keystone Historic Preservation Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

“Of course, it’s had some work done on it, but our windows are in really tough shape,” said Bonnie Yuscavage, curator of the historical society.

To meet the conditions of the grant, the historical society is required to match the amount, prompting a creative fundraising initiative—an Americana Costume Party. This event invites participants to don Americana-themed attire, ranging from a simple top hat to complete period costumes, allowing them to revel in the rich history of Susquehanna County.

“We’re inviting folks to come in any form of Americana dress, can be just a top hat or a scarf or a boa, or it could be full costume, however they feel, to come enjoy the fashion and the fun of Susquehanna County,” Yuscavage said.

The event, named “Window Dressing: A Gala Celebrating the Fashion of Susquehanna County in History,” will take place at The Relic on Church Street in Montrose. Attendees can expect a delightful spread from Darrow’s Catering and entertainment by Mama Bullmoose.

“We will be dancing like it’s 1899,” Yuscavage added, encouraging guests to embrace costumes from various historical periods, including Victorian, military, and more.

While costumes enhance the experience, dressing up is optional for the gala. The event will also showcase select gowns from the society’s extensive collection.

Window work

The restoration project is expected to total approximately $200,000. Owens Historic Preservation Services of Selinsgrove has been enlisted to carefully remove the windows for refurbishment. The process involves replacing the windows with wood and updating elements like lead removal, re-glazing, and re-caulking, with some frame parts and sills also undergoing repairs due to deterioration.

Donations are welcomed to support this effort. Contributions can be sent to the Susquehanna County Historical Society (SCHS) at 18 Monument St., Montrose, PA 18801, with a note specifying the donation is for window restoration.

Window Dressing: A Gala Celebrating the Fashion of Susquehanna County in History, is Wednesday, May 27, at the Relic, 228 Church St., Montrose. For more details, contact the historical society at 570-278-1622.
