Fatal Interstate Incident: Massachusetts Driver Charged
A tragic incident on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County has resulted in the death of a Pennsylvania state trooper, leading to charges against a truck driver from Massachusetts. The accident occurred early Wednesday morning, involving a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 33-year-old Michael Bon of Brockton.
The victim, Trooper Michael Pahira, was engaged in a routine inspection of a tractor-trailer on the highway’s shoulder at the time of the accident. The truck Pahira was inspecting was operated by Walter Alfredo Reinoso from Queens, New York.
According to State Police reports, Bon’s vehicle veered off course, initially clipping Pahira’s parked Ford F-350’s mirror before colliding with the rear of Reinoso’s trailer. Notably, Pahira’s emergency lights were active, and both vehicles were positioned safely outside the main travel lanes. The stretch of the interstate where the incident occurred was straight, free from defects, and the weather conditions were clear.
The collision resulted in Pahira being trapped beneath Bon’s truck, which caught fire immediately. Nearby construction workers noticed the smoke and rushed to the scene, helping to extricate Pahira from the burning wreckage and move him a safe distance away, approximately 30 yards from the crash site.
Acting State Police Commissioner George L. Bivens explained at a Wednesday press conference that, “His injuries were very severe. He never regained consciousness.” Pahira was subsequently taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital East, where he was declared dead at 11:45 a.m.
Michael Bon faces multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, and reckless driving. Additional charges are related to the endangerment of others and violations concerning emergency response areas. Following his arraignment, Bon was held at Schuylkill County Prison with bail set at $700,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16.
