Controversial Social Media Posts Ignite Debate in Luzerne County
A recent social media post has sparked controversy in Luzerne County, drawing widespread condemnation from political groups. During the Super Bowl, T.J. Fitzgerald, leader of a local Republican splinter group, shared a post on Facebook that disparaged Spanish speakers and the performer Bad Bunny.
Expressing himself from a local restaurant, Fitzgerald stated, “(Expletive) the Bunny. You know what? I walked outside and I’m freezing, and I don’t give a (expletive). You want to know something? Because I love America and (expletive) every (expletive)-body that speaks Spanish.”
On Monday, Fitzgerald commented briefly via phone, expressing regret and an intention to issue a formal statement. “I’ve got to think about what to say,” he admitted. “Obviously, I didn’t use my words too good.”
The official Luzerne County Republican Party, led by Chairperson Lee Ann McDermott, swiftly criticized Fitzgerald’s remarks. In a Facebook post, McDermott emphasized the party’s stance against racism and divisive language.
“Let me be clear: this group is not affiliated with, recognized by, or authorized to speak on behalf of the Republican Party of Luzerne County,” McDermott asserted. She further criticized Fitzgerald, stating his behavior undermines the party’s candidates and volunteers.
The Luzerne County Republican Party reaffirmed its dedication to winning elections and promoting conservative values with professionalism and integrity. McDermott stated, “Republicans deserve better, and we intend to deliver it.”
Fitzgerald’s controversial online presence extends beyond the Super Bowl post. A day earlier, he appeared in a YouTube video on the NEPA Republicans’ Facebook page, advocating for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) outside a local office.
“Hey guys, just so you know, we are definitely behind ICE 100%,” Fitzgerald declared. He further expressed strong support for former President Trump and discussed issues related to immigration and cultural preservation.
