Linden Street Bridge in Scranton to Close for Rehab Until Year-End

A digital sign alerts motorists to upcoming construction work that will close Scranton's Linden Street Bridge from Wednesday, May 6, 2026 through the rest of the year.

Major Infrastructure Overhaul Set to Impact Downtown Scranton Traffic

A key transit route in downtown Scranton is slated for significant improvements, affecting local traffic for the remainder of the year. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the Linden Street Bridge will undergo rehabilitation starting Wednesday.

This vital structure, located between 7th and Mifflin avenues, spans the Lackawanna River as well as the tracks of the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority. The bridge, which has served the community for approximately half a century, accommodates an average of 4,500 vehicles daily. However, according to PennDOT spokesperson Elizabeth Fabri, the bridge “is past its useful life,” necessitating the $6 million project.

Rehabilitation efforts will focus on reinforcing the bridge’s sub-structure, along with necessary repairs to its deck and sidewalk, Fabri added. While vehicular traffic will be rerouted along 7th Avenue to Lackawanna Avenue, pedestrian access across the bridge will remain unaffected.

The renovation is primarily funded through federal resources. This project is part of a broader initiative by the Dunmore-based PennDOT District 4, which plans to allocate a record $655 million for infrastructure improvements across a six-county area this year. More details on these plans can be found here.
