Governor Shapiro Supports Pike County Mosque After Shooting Incident

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro shakes hands with Imam Azzeddine Sarii during a news conference Feb. 25, 2026, at the Pike County Islamic Center. A gunman fired multiple shots into the mosque early on the morning of Feb. 22, 2026. It was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured. "I want you to know your governor's got your back," Shapiro told the congregation moments before the news conference.

In a touching display of unity and resilience, the community of Pike County gathered at a mosque that recently became the target of gunfire. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro joined the congregation, pledging support and solidarity in the wake of the unsettling incident.

Incident Overview

Just days into the holy month of Ramadan, an unknown assailant fired multiple shots into the newly established mosque in Westfall Township. The attack occurred early Sunday morning when the building was empty, causing no injuries but leaving visible damage.

Community Response

Imam Fahid Mahmood expressed confusion and empathy for the shooter, speculating, “The person who did it, maybe he has some mental problems, some emotional (problems) maybe something going on in his personal life, so he wants to take it out somewhere.” He noted that the attack seemed not to intend harm to individuals, as it occurred when the mosque was unoccupied.

The Eastern Pike Regional Police Department is actively investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to contact them at 570-491-4040 or via email at cadams@eprpd.org. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has offered a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Community Support and Unity

Despite the unsettling event, the Muslim community of Pike County, which had previously traveled 30 miles to Middletown, New York, for prayers, remains undeterred. The mosque, formally known as the Pike County Islamic Center, opened its doors in August and has quickly become a vital part of the local community.

Dr. Noor Shamim, a local dentist, reflected on the significance of the mosque, saying, “So, it is a blessing for us to have a mosque here so we can come and pray and have a congregation here.”

Mohammed Jahangir, a restaurant owner from Matamoras, expressed disbelief at the shooting, emphasizing his positive experiences with local residents and law enforcement.

Governor’s Support

Governor Shapiro, who is Jewish, related the incident to a personal experience where the Governor’s Mansion was attacked. He stressed the importance of standing together in the face of such incidents, stating, “It was done in a way to try and wreak havoc in a community… This community will not be defined by an individual who went out to try and harm us.”

With a commitment to support the mosque’s growth, Shapiro assured the congregation, “I want to see this congregation grow and thrive over many years, and I’m going to be there with you every step of the way.”

Meanwhile, Imam Mahmood showed a willingness to engage positively with the perpetrator, hoping to understand their situation and offer help. “A normal person will never do this kind of stuff,” he reflected.
