Federal Purchase of Warehouse Sparks Local Concerns Over ICE Facility

Feds buy Schuylkill County warehouse expected to house immigrant detainees

Federal Government Acquires Former Big Lots Warehouse for $119.5 Million

The former Big Lots warehouse located on Rausch Creek Road in Tremont Township, Schuylkill County, has caught the attention of local residents following its recent acquisition by the federal government for a sum exceeding $119.5 million. The transaction was officially documented in a deed filed on Monday.

This move has stirred concerns among community members, who speculate that the massive 1.3-million-square-foot facility might soon serve as a processing center for immigrants in detention. Residents voiced their worries during a town hall meeting held at a local fire hall on the same day the deed came into effect.

The property transfer involved BIGTRPA001 LLC, a subsidiary of the national real estate owner Blue Owl Real Estate Net Lease Property Fund, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. According to the deed, the agreement was reached on January 15 and was finalized on January 29.

While no official plans for the building have been announced by the federal government, a December report from The Washington Post listed Tremont Township as a potential location for new detention centers. Meanwhile, the township’s tax collector reported receiving inquiries from a company involved in the transaction regarding property tax matters earlier in January.
