Dietrich Theater’s Winter Fest Film Festival: 20 Films in 21 Days

Movie buffs filled the Dietrich Theater for preview day ahead of the annual Winter Fest Film Festival.

The Dietrich Theater is rolling out a cinematic spectacle with its annual Winter Fest Film Festival, which kicks off this Friday and runs through March 12. This event showcases a compelling lineup of films from the past year, aiming to captivate film enthusiasts with a rich array of narratives.

Ronnie Harvey, the theater’s general manager and film curator, highlights that the festival will feature a blend of Academy Award contenders, international cinema, and indie films. “They are the best independent, foreign and documentary films out in the market right now,” Harvey stated. “We package them all together for this three-week seasonal experience, because throughout the year we feel like we don’t get the opportunity to show very adult-oriented films that make you question things. That opens up your eyes to new cultures and new experiences.”

Twenty Movies Spanning Three Weeks

The festival had an exciting preview on February 12, where audiences got a glimpse of the trailers for all the films. Harvey noted the enthusiasm among attendees, particularly for movies like “Rental Family,” a Brendan Fraser dramedy, and “Hamnet.” The parody film “Second Hall,” which spoofs “Downton Abbey,” also garnered significant laughter during its trailer.

Opening the festival is “The Choral,” an intense R-rated drama about a wartime chorus group, followed by “The Rental Family,” set in the bustling cityscape of Tokyo. Many films, including “Hamnet” and “The Rental Family,” will be shown multiple times, with each getting eight screenings.

Expanding Reach and Audience

Initially a two-week affair, the Winter Fest Film Festival has expanded to three weeks, utilizing more screens to accommodate a growing audience. This year, Harvey has observed a notable increase in visitors traveling from as far as New York City and Philadelphia. “We’ve noticed over the years, more and more people are coming even farther away, staying in the area, dining at the restaurant, shopping at our shops,” he mentioned.

The festival will conclude with a post-film discussion on March 13, providing attendees an opportunity to engage in conversations about the films. Harvey describes this gathering as a space where people “drink coffee and eat doughnuts while talking about stand-out moments from the movies.” He added, “We go over the films, what we thought about them, our favorite moments, things that you know stuck out to us, whether it be cinematography, direction or acting.”

Coinciding with the festival, the Academy Awards on March 15 will feature several of the films being showcased, many of which are nominated. The lineup includes a broad range of genres, from comedy and drama to documentaries and musicals, with most films rated R or PG-13. Harvey expressed confidence in the festival’s appeal, stating, “I believe there’s something in here for everybody.”
