Whatley’s Vision for Health Care Reform Sparks Debate in North Carolina

Michael Whatley, a Republican contender for the U.S. Senate, has called for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), known as Obamacare, which currently insures almost 1 million residents in North Carolina.

During a radio interview on November 12, Whatley criticized the ACA, stating, “When you look at structurally what has happened since they passed Obamacare, prices have absolutely gone through the roof. We need to get the government out of the way and get back to market-driven solutions on health care.”

Whatley’s approach resonates with ideas from A Plan to Repeal and Replace Obamacare, a report by the conservative Heritage Foundation advocating for a market-based health care system.

Despite Whatley’s stance, data indicates that while health care costs have risen since the ACA’s implementation in 2010, the rate of increase has slowed compared to previous periods.

Whatley also commended Senate Republicans for their previous efforts to block an extension of tax subsidies essential for ACA affordability, a move which resulted in a 44-day government shutdown and affected SNAP benefits.

The Senate is anticipated to reconsider the subsidy extension next month, though its passage remains uncertain. This decision could lead to a potential doubling of premiums for approximately 888,000 North Carolinians.

Competing for the seat of retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, Whatley’s Democratic opponent is expected to be former Governor Roy Cooper. With health care policy as a pivotal issue, the race is gaining significant attention.

During his tenure as governor, Cooper successfully expanded Medicaid in the state, offering low- to no-cost health insurance to over 600,000 North Carolinians. In contrast, Whatley supports the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which may result in 700,000 people losing Medicaid coverage.

A poll conducted on November 18 by the conservative-leaning Carolina Journal indicates Cooper is leading with 46% compared to Whatley’s 42%, underscoring the race’s potential impact on Senate control.
