Valerie Foushee Narrowly Leads Nida Allam in Tight Primary Race

Nida Allam is a Durham County County Commissioner who is challenging Valerie Foushee in the Democratic Primary for the U.S. House of Representatives District 4, which includes most of Durham County. In February, Allam joined Bernie Sanders as part of his Fight Oligarchy tour.

In a closely contested primary race, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee appears to have edged out her challenger, Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam, though the potential for a recount remains. The election results, still subject to the counting of provisional votes, showed Foushee leading by a narrow margin of 1,202 votes, with Foushee capturing 49.18% and Allam 48.22% of the votes.

Backed by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and other progressive groups, Allam’s campaign centered on a push for a more left-leaning Democratic platform in Congress, particularly against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s policies. While Allam succeeded in Durham County and southwestern Wake County, she couldn’t surpass Foushee in Orange and Chatham counties, areas where Foushee has previously held sway as a state senator.

The potential for a recount looms as the election results remain within the 1% margin. Although the Associated Press has not officially called the race, Foushee has already claimed victory. In her statement, she emphasized her commitment to progressive change, stating, “The people of the 4th District demand progressive change like dismantling ICE, ensuring Medicare for All, regulating AI, establishing a Green New Deal, and passing legislation to block arms sales to Israel.”

Allam’s possible victory would signify a shift among Democratic voters towards younger, more vocal leadership. Her campaign’s focus on abolishing ICE and criticizing Foushee’s ties to pro-Israel groups marked key differences between the candidates. Foushee, while supporting defunding ICE, has faced scrutiny for previously accepting contributions from AIPAC, though she pledged to stop such funding and co-sponsored the “Block the Bombs Act” against arms sales to Israel.

The race was heavily influenced by significant financial contributions from outside groups. Allam found support from entities like “American Priorities,” which spent $500,000 on her behalf, and “Leaders We Deserve,” led by David Hogg, contributing $270,000. Meanwhile, Foushee received a late surge of support from PACs like “Jobs and Democracy PAC” and “Article One PAC,” collectively spending millions to bolster her campaign.

This primary followed a similar pattern to recent Democratic contests, like the one in New Jersey where Analilia Mejia upset former Congressman Tom Malinowski. Foushee’s endorsements from high-profile North Carolina Democrats, including Gov. Josh Stein and former Gov. Roy Cooper, played a crucial role in her campaign.

The 4th Congressional District has undergone redistricting, concentrating Democratic voters and altering its political landscape since the 2022 primary. Foushee, who previously won decisively against Allam, faced a much tighter race this time around.
