Sen. Tillis Demands DHS Details on Charlotte Border Patrol Operation

Tillis presses DHS for records on Border Patrol's Charlotte operation

Sen. Tillis Seeks Clarity on Border Patrol’s Charlotte Operations

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis has called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide comprehensive details regarding a U.S. Border Patrol operation conducted in Charlotte last November. His inquiry follows concerns about the treatment of U.S. citizens during the operation, dubbed “Operation Charlotte’s Web.”

In a detailed letter addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Tillis praised the arrests of individuals with criminal records but expressed concerns about reports of U.S. citizens potentially being detained, experiencing use of force, or having property damaged during the operation.

Federal authorities have released minimal information concerning their activities in Charlotte, sharing only a small number of names out of the hundreds arrested. Tillis is pressing DHS to disclose encounter-level data, particularly whether force was employed, whether U.S. citizens were involved, and the justifications for each interaction.

Additionally, Tillis seeks to know the total number of individuals detained and the number of those with prior criminal records. He has requested that this information be made available before Secretary Noem’s testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled for March 3.
