Piedmont Opera Welcomes New Leadership Amidst Anniversary Celebrations
The Piedmont Opera is marking a significant milestone with its 50th anniversary while introducing a fresh perspective under the leadership of Joseph Mechavich. Known for his innovative approach to opera, Mechavich has already made a notable impact with sold-out performances and creative set designs. In a discussion with WFDD’s David Ford, he shared insights into his plans and aspirations for the company.
Vision for Piedmont Opera
Joseph Mechavich, who hails from Minnesota, draws parallels between his home state’s vibrant art scene and that of Winston-Salem. He expresses a desire to create a strong sense of community ownership and excitement around the opera. “I grew up in Minnesota, which had a vibrant art scene, very much like Winston-Salem,” he explains. His approach involves engaging with patrons to understand their preferences and fostering connections with other local organizations.
Strengthening Community Collaborations
Mechavich emphasizes the importance of local partnerships in enriching the opera’s offerings. He envisions working with various regional entities that align with the themes presented in their productions. For instance, the upcoming production of Carmen will involve collaboration with the Hispanic community, reflecting the story’s Spanish setting. “There are other entities throughout this region where, if we’re telling a story, there might be a theme in the story that resonates with what they’re doing,” he notes.
Experiencing Opera for the First Time
Addressing those new to opera, Mechavich highlights the communal and immersive nature of opera experiences. He likens opera houses to communal homes where audiences gather not just for the performances but also for the shared experience with friends and neighbors. “You have to remember, it’s called an opera house. It’s a home,” he states. He encourages newcomers to embrace the multifaceted art form that combines music, drama, and visual arts, promising a powerful and energetic experience.
Through his leadership, Joseph Mechavich aims to cement the Piedmont Opera’s role as an integral part of the community’s cultural fabric, inviting both seasoned patrons and newcomers to partake in the operatic experience.
