As Thanksgiving approaches, North Carolina finds itself in the spotlight for its significant role in turkey production across the United States. While Minnesota leads in the number of turkeys raised, North Carolina distinguishes itself by producing the heaviest birds in the nation, making it the top state for turkey pounds produced.
Katie Williams from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services highlighted the state’s achievement, stating, “We may have fewer turkeys, but we’re producing really efficient animals.” This focus on size and efficiency has become a point of pride for the local industry.
With the holiday season ramping up, turkey farmers in North Carolina are experiencing a surge in activity. The rush is on to ensure that frozen turkeys reach supermarkets nationwide in time for the festive season. Williams explained that the farmers are busy year-round, but the demand intensifies as Thanksgiving nears, necessitating the swift movement of turkeys to retailers and processors.
In addition to meeting consumer demand, North Carolina farms have also contributed to ceremonial events. This year, they provided turkeys for Governor Josh Stein’s annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon, and even sent two birds to the White House for President Trump’s turkey pardon.
