Low Temps in Carolinas Cause Power Strain; Duke Energy Urges Cutbacks

Duke Energy encourages customers to reduce morning energy use to avoid temporary power outages

Cold Snap Challenges Carolina’s Energy Infrastructure

As a severe cold front envelops the Carolinas, energy consumption is soaring, putting immense pressure on the region’s power grid. Over 5,000 power outages have been reported, predominantly in areas still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

In response, Duke Energy is urging residents to participate in energy conservation efforts. Residents are asked to reduce their energy usage voluntarily between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday. Suggested measures include setting thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature, refraining from using heavy appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, and ensuring all non-essential devices are turned off.

Additionally, owners of electric vehicles are advised to postpone charging their cars until later in the day to help alleviate the strain on the power grid.
