Western North Carolina is preparing a series of events this weekend to honor Juneteenth, the significant day when enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom in 1865. The holiday, observed on June 19, was federally recognized in 2021, marking a pivotal moment in American history.
Known as Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston to announce that the enslaved Black population was free, a full two months after the Confederacy surrendered and over two years following the Emancipation Proclamation.
Regarded as the nation’s second independence day, the celebration is especially significant within the African American community, as noted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
In honor of Juneteenth, many local banks, as well as city and county offices, will be closed. The United States Post Offices will also observe the holiday by closing their doors.
Celebrations of Juneteenth encompass a variety of activities such as community gatherings, educational events about history, and cultural festivities that celebrate Black heritage and resilience. It is a time for reflection and recognition of historical progress.
