Massive Food Drive Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary
To mark the United States’ 250th anniversary, a significant initiative is underway, delivering 250 truckloads of food nationwide. This ambitious project aims to address the pressing issue of food insecurity across the country.
On August 27, a massive shipment of 40,000 pounds of food arrived in Athens, Georgia, as part of a joint effort between America250 and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This delivery is just one component of a larger campaign to distribute essential food supplies to communities in need.
Statistics from Feeding America highlight the urgency of this initiative, revealing that one in six individuals in Georgia struggle with hunger. The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, which serves 15 counties, is set to distribute this latest shipment, providing sustenance to approximately 1,400 people for a week.
Local officials, including Representative Eric Gisler and Senator Frank Ginn, were present at the food bank to acknowledge the delivery and express gratitude towards The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their generosity and support.
The President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Athens, Dexter Joyner, attended the event and commended the church’s active role in this charitable endeavor. Joyner noted, “All the food that is coming off the food truck today was made, grown, and donated by members of the church and packaged in their own warehouse in Salt Lake City. So it’s unique that volunteers take the time to do that it’s not something where we just go buy food and bring it in. It’s made by members of the church because they wanna give.”
