Howard Miller Co. Closes After 99 Years, Impacting Triad Locations

Clock and furniture maker with Triad presence to close

Renowned Michigan Clockmaker to Wind Down Operations After 99 Years

A longstanding Michigan-based manufacturer known for its elegant timepieces and furniture is shuttering its doors after nearly a century. Howard Miller Co., famed for its production of grandfather clocks, wall clocks, and furnishings, is set to close.

The company, which has been a staple in the industry for 99 years, currently employs approximately 200 people. One of the locations impacted by this decision is the Hekman Furniture Co. warehouse in Lexington, part of the Triad region. Howard Miller acquired Hekman in 1983.

Challenges in the housing market, closely linked to furniture sales, have contributed to the company’s struggles. In addition, CEO Buzz Miller, the founder’s grandson, cites the increased costs of critical components due to tariffs imposed during the Trump administration as a factor in their decision.

Efforts to secure a buyer for the company have been unsuccessful. However, Howard Miller Co. plans to continue operations into the next year, focusing on selling off existing inventory.
