Heavy Snow and High Winds Hit Northwestern North Carolina

Snow, strong winds create hazardous travel conditions throughout the region

Unexpected Heavy Snowfall Hits Northwestern North Carolina

As winter weather sweeps across northwestern North Carolina, snowfall totals are steadily increasing. By mid-day Saturday, areas within the Triad had accumulated approximately 2.5 inches, while higher elevations reported up to 5 inches.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Nick Luchetti highlighted the storm’s intensity, stating, “I think the early morning snow out there has kind of outperformed the models at this point, and as if it continues all day, we could see 5, 6 inch reports up that way.”

Forecasters predict that heavy snow will persist until around 5 p.m. Saturday, with lighter snowfalls expected to last overnight.

Wind and Visibility Concerns

Adding to the challenging conditions, high winds are anticipated. Governor Josh Stein warned of potential wind gusts ranging from 25 to 45 miles per hour in central North Carolina, with even stronger gusts of 55 to 65 miles per hour in the mountainous regions.

“Strong winds will likely reduce visibility from blowing/drifting snow and could lead to brief blizzard conditions, especially within heavy snow bands,” Governor Stein cautioned. He advised residents to avoid travel due to hazardous driving and potential white-out conditions.

Travel Conditions

In response to the adverse weather, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has pre-treated roads with brine and dispatched plows, prioritizing interstates and major routes. By Saturday morning, over 5,500 tons of salt had been distributed statewide.

Travel disruptions are widespread. At the Piedmont Triad International Airport, approximately 40 flights have been canceled, while public transportation services in Winston-Salem have been suspended. Overnight, the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported 176 collisions and attended to 216 service calls.

Closures and Postponements

The storm is impacting various local events and governmental functions. The NASCAR Cook Out Clash, initially set for Sunday, has been rescheduled to Monday, February 2.

Forsyth County government offices, including all library branches and the animal shelter, are closed due to the storm. Additionally, all county parks are shut until further notice.
