Haitian TPS Extension: NC Immigrants Secure Two-Week Legal Stay in US

Haitian immigrants with TPS get two-week extension to keep working legally

Temporary Protected Status for Haitian Immigrants in North Carolina Extended Amid Legal Disputes

Haitian nationals residing in North Carolina under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) have received a temporary reprieve, allowing them to continue living and working legally in the United States for an additional two weeks. This development comes as federal authorities have decided to prolong their protections amidst ongoing legal battles.

On Friday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that the immigration status and employment authorization documents for Haitian TPS holders will remain valid until July 24. This decision provides temporary relief as litigation over the program’s future continues.

The extension is a response to a federal judge’s ruling that temporarily halted the Trump administration’s attempt to terminate Haiti’s TPS designation. Despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision granting the Trump administration the authority to end TPS and indicating that such decisions are generally beyond judicial review, legal challenges regarding Haiti’s designation are still being actively contested.

In North Carolina, approximately 13,000 Haitians are residing, though the exact number of those currently protected under TPS remains uncertain.
