Severe Drought Conditions Affecting Western North Carolina
Western North Carolina is grappling with severe drought conditions, particularly in Wilkes and Watauga counties. According to the state’s Department of Environmental Quality, these areas are now classified under ‘exceptional drought,’ the most intense category on the department’s scale.
Wilkes and Watauga are not alone; they are among five counties in this region experiencing these dire conditions. Moreover, much of the state continues to face extreme or severe drought levels, which are slightly less severe.
Boone, for instance, has witnessed a significant shortfall in rainfall, with totals down by over 21 inches since August of last year, as reported by the NC State Climate Office. This makes it one of the areas with the most substantial deficits.
Despite forecasts predicting some rain this week, officials express doubts about any meaningful improvement in drought conditions. Residents are advised to stay informed about potential water use restrictions by consulting local water systems.
