The U.S. Department of Energy has spotlighted Duke Energy for a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the longevity of coal plants. Under a federal plan, coal facilities are receiving financial support to remain operational for extended periods.
Duke Energy’s Belews Creek Steam Station, a two-unit coal plant, is set to benefit from up to $34 million in federal funds. This funding is part of the federal government’s commitment to support the coal industry through its “beautiful clean coal” initiatives.
While the exact amount is still under discussion, the utility is optimistic about reducing operational costs through this grant. “We evaluate and take every opportunity to reduce cost for our customers, including seeking federal grants,” stated Riley Cook, a spokesperson for Duke Energy. “So, we appreciate the White House granting these funds.”
The primary objective of the grant is to support maintenance and upgrades at the Belews Creek facility. This includes enhancements to fans and boilers, aiming to boost the plant’s efficiency and reliability while extending its operational life to 2040.
