North Carolina could see significant changes in electricity costs, as Duke Energy proposes a rate increase for its customers across the state. If approved, these increases will take effect over two years, beginning in 2027. Customers of Duke Energy Progress can expect an 18.5% rise in their average residential rates, while Duke Energy Carolinas customers face a 15.8% increase.
The proposed rate increases are intended to finance energy distribution projects, which account for over a third of the investments planned for this period. These funds will also support capital projects such as grid enhancements and the construction of new power plants.
Public hearings will be held by state regulators, beginning on March 30 in Raleigh. The hearings will be scheduled differently for each service area, so customers should check their most recent bill to confirm whether they fall under Carolinas or Progress services.
