Cone Health Proposes New Forsyth County Hospital to Address Bed Shortage
In a strategic move to enhance healthcare infrastructure, Cone Health has unveiled a plan to establish a new hospital in Forsyth County. The proposed $320 million facility aims to meet the growing demand for hospital beds in the area, as identified by state assessments.
The new hospital is planned to be located in southeast Forsyth, conveniently positioned along I-70 and the Northern Beltway. Melissa Shearer, Cone Health Vice President of Strategy, highlighted the state’s findings that the region requires approximately 100 additional hospital beds. Shearer stated, “We are proposing to serve just about half of that need, because we believe that we bring a different model of what we call value-based care, personalized, convenient care based on proven models that connect care and connect health and well-being.”
Designed to span nearly 200,000 square feet, the facility will feature 56 acute care beds, 18 emergency department bays, and four procedure rooms. This expansion is intended to complement Cone Health’s existing operations in Kernersville, High Point, and western Guilford County.
This development comes on the heels of a prolonged territorial dispute between Cone Health and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Atrium Health had proposed a new hospital in Greensboro, a plan that state officials ultimately approved, with the facility expected to open in 2029.
