2026 Hurricane Season Forecast: What to Expect?
As June ushers in the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, attention turns to predictions for storm activity. Colorado State University has released its annual forecast, projecting a quieter season with an expected 13 named storms and 2 major hurricanes.
This forecast represents a decrease from last year’s estimate of 17 named storms and 4 major hurricanes, attributed to the weakening of La Niña and the emergence of El Niño conditions. Despite the lower prediction, experts caution that significant impacts can still occur if a storm makes landfall.
Corey Davis, Assistant State Climatologist, highlights the potential implications for North Carolina’s persistent drought. “If we’re hoping for some tropical activity to tamp down this drought, the best chances will probably be early on in the summer,” Davis explains. “As we head toward the end of the year, chances increase that we will see some other very moisture-rich weather systems begin to move in and affect us as this El Niño takes shape.”
