Driver charged with second-degree murder after car crash kills Forsyth County sheriff's deputy

Teen Charged in Fatal Crash Involving Forsyth County Deputy

A tragic incident involving a high-speed crash has led to charges of second-degree murder against a 19-year-old in Forsyth County. The weekend collision resulted in the death of an on-duty deputy, casting a somber mood over the local community.

Warrants detail that Bryan Castillo was driving at a speed of 100 miles per hour on Walnut Cove Road when he collided with Deputy Kaleb Mitchell’s vehicle. The crash led to Mitchell being rushed to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, where he was declared deceased shortly thereafter.

During a press conference held on Monday, Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill emphasized the need for safer driving practices within the community. He stated, “Without commenting on the facts of this particular case, but you understand that the individual charged here is charged with driving in excess of 100 miles per hour on the roads here in Forsyth County. That’s an abandonment of the social obligation we hold to one another.”

In memory of Deputy Mitchell, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has established a memorial outside its main office. This gesture serves as a tribute to his service and a reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving.

As the legal process unfolds, Castillo remains in custody without the option of bail.
