Washoe Tribe Reclaims Historic Land for Cultural Revival

In a significant move towards reclaiming their ancestral lands, the Washoe Tribe has secured the purchase of a substantial 10,274-acre property. This acquisition, completed on February 10th, was made possible through collaboration with entities such as the Wildlife Conservation Board and the Northern Sierra Partnership.

Situated northeast of Lake Tahoe and extending approximately 20 miles north of Reno, the land offers the Washoe Tribe a profound opportunity to reconnect with their heritage. Washoe Tribal Chairman Serrell Smokey emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “The Washoe People, being removed from our lands, fought hard to get every little bit back, and now we actually have something to call ours.”

This land marks the initial endeavor under the Waší·šiw Land Trust. The tribe envisions further expansion, aiming to reclaim more territories that historically belong to the Washoe homelands north of Lake Tahoe.

Smokey has expressed plans to begin restoration efforts on the property, focusing on the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. The goal is to ensure that the land remains a sanctuary for both the environment and the community, fostering a safe and nurturing space for cultural and ecological preservation.
