Thanksgiving in a Bag: Volunteers Aid Food Insecure Families

Reno and Sparks unite to help neighbors in need

Local Initiative Provides Thanksgiving Meals for Those in Need

In an inspiring show of community spirit, volunteers are banding together to deliver Thanksgiving meals through an initiative known as “Thanksgiving in a Bag.” Each package includes a selection of holiday staples such as canned turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and green beans.

The distribution of these meal kits is facilitated by The Karma Box Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals facing food insecurity and homelessness in the area.

The concept of “Thanksgiving in a Bag” was born when organizer Jen Roehr was inspired by a TikTok page that demonstrated ways to create cost-effective meals for families under financial strain.

“I thought, OK, I can sit here and be really angry about what’s going on, or I can do something,” Roehr said. “Even if it’s small, I can just do something about it.”

Creating each meal kit costs approximately $10 and is meant to provide for up to three people. The initiative has successfully gathered nearly $2,000 through its GoFundMe campaign and has also received numerous food donations from community members.

This weekend, volunteers are expected to assemble the meal kits and distribute them to between 50 and 60 Karma Box locations across Reno and Sparks.

Roehr emphasizes that even modest contributions can significantly impact those in need.
