Stay Algae Aware: Identifying and Reporting Harmful Algae Blooms

Harmful Algae Bloom Task Force Encourages Public to be ‘Algae Aware’ This Summer

Potential Dangers Lurking in Washoe Lake’s Waters

The serene waters of Washoe Lake glimmer under the morning sunlight, painting a picturesque scene. However, beneath its beauty lies a potential hazard known as cyanobacteria, a naturally occurring microorganism in lakes and ponds that can swiftly evolve into a perilous algae bloom.

Weston Fettgather, clad in muck boots and blue gloves, diligently collects samples from the lake’s edge where this green, frothy substance congregates. Working with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Fettgather emphasizes the risk of harmful algae blooms, especially as temperatures rise. “Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are really common symptoms with humans and pets after exposure. With dogs, you might see lethargy and imbalance. If you do notice that, the best thing to do would be to immediately go to a doctor or bring your pet to a vet,” Fettgather advises.

Harmful algae blooms are a significant concern during the warmer months, as they thrive in elevated temperatures. The public is urged to remain vigilant while enjoying recreational areas, as these blooms can pose severe health risks to both humans and animals.

The Harmful Algae Blooms Taskforce, comprising the Nevada Department of Agriculture, Department of Human Services, and the Department of Wildlife, aims to increase public awareness and encourage the reporting of potential algae bloom sightings. They employ tools like satellite remote imaging and ground reporting to monitor these occurrences.

Fettgather describes the appearance of cyanobacteria as “bright green floating on the surface,” often resembling spilled green paint or pea soup. He stresses the necessity of thorough testing to confirm the presence of toxins in collected samples, highlighting that reporting is essential to safeguard public health and aquatic environments.

To assist in these efforts, the public is encouraged to be “Algae Aware” by reporting any sightings to the Harmful Algae Blooms Dashboard. This initiative is crucial for preserving the safety and enjoyment of Nevada’s water bodies.
